How to Screen Forklift Suppliers in China: 10 Checks Before You Commit

The cheapest time to catch a weak forklift supplier is before the order, when the only cost is your time. Ten checks cover most of the risk: registration, factory type, product range, component brands, test facilities, documentation, MOQ behavior, communication, spare parts and references.

The 10 checks

  1. Business registration. Confirm the registered company name, address and scope of business match who signs the contract.
  2. Factory type. Is the supplier the manufacturer or a trading company? A manufacturer answers component and process questions directly.
  3. Product range. Check the actual catalog. A supplier that lists forklifts alongside unrelated goods may be reselling.
  4. Component brands. Ask for the motor, controller, battery and mast suppliers. Component brands drive quality and spare-part availability.
  5. Test facilities. Does the factory run each truck through a functional test before shipping? Ask to see the test area.
  6. Documentation. Request the spec sheet, datasheets and any certificates in writing, and compare them with the contract.
  7. MOQ behavior. A supplier that quotes one MOQ for standard models and another for customization is normal. One that is vague is a warning.
  8. Communication. Test response quality with a detailed technical question. The answer reveals product knowledge.
  9. Spare parts. Confirm which wear parts are stocked and the lead time to ship them. After-sales matters more on forklifts than on consumer goods.
  10. References. Ask for export records or buyer references in your market. Confirm with the reference directly where possible.

Signals that deserve extra attention

A supplier that cannot name the controller brand, that avoids the test question, or that promises every certificate without documents should be checked more slowly. Request the documents, then verify them independently rather than accepting the claim.

Equally, a supplier that asks sharp questions back about your load, floor and shift pattern is usually a manufacturer who has been through this before.

Factory visit and video audit

An on-site visit or a structured video audit covers checks 2, 4 and 5 directly. Walk the production line, see the model you are buying being assembled, and watch a unit go through the functional test.

Gangchi operates as an electric forklift manufacturer with OEM/ODM programs, and visits or audits are a normal part of the buying process for larger orders.

Put the checks in the contract

Whatever you verify, write the agreed facts into the purchase order: component brands, test procedure, packaging, documentation and the rework rule for failed units. A supplier that agreed on paper is easier to hold to the spec than one that only agreed in chat.

Frequently asked questions

Should I only work with manufacturers in China, not trading companies?

A direct manufacturer answers technical and after-sales questions more reliably, which matters for forklifts. A good trading company can still work if it is transparent and responsive, but verify more.

How can I check a Chinese company's registration?

Ask for the business license and cross-check the company name and address. For export activities, review the export records or customs data the supplier can provide.

Is a video audit enough instead of a factory visit?

A structured video audit covers the main checkpoints when travel is not possible. Ask to see the assembly line, test area and the specific model in production.

What spare parts should a forklift supplier stock?

Common wear items: filters, brake parts, hydraulic seals, contactors or controller units, and mast rollers. Confirm the stock position and shipping lead time for the model you buy.

How many suppliers should I compare?

Three to five serious quotes is a practical range. Send the same spec sheet to each and compare the machine dimensions, component brands and written timelines, not just the price.

Send the inquiry team your spec sheet with the ten checks attached, and ask for the component brands, test procedure and spare-parts plan in the quotation so the screening happens during quoting, not after the order.
